Hard exercise can reduce women's fertility - 14/06/2010

Women who regularly exercise to the point of exhaustion are three times more likely to have trouble reproducing, a Norwegian study has found.

While female athletes are known to have a greater risk of infertility, the study by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology has found a link between difficulty in conceiving and exercising heavily in non-athletes, the UK's Daily Telegraph reported.

In the study, 3000 women of childbearing age were surveyed on the frequency, duration and intensity of their workouts. Ten years later, they were asked about their pregnancies and childbirth.

Though the data was adjusted for other risk factors such as BMI, age and smoking, the women who reported consistently pushing themselves during their workouts had the greatest risk of impaired fertility.
