Finding it hard to fall pregnant? - 14/06/2010

One in 6 couples has difficulty falling pregnant. The causes of infertility are wide and varied but you can do some things to improve your chances of falling pregnant both naturally and with Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART).

One way is to start by improving your nutrition. For some, this may mean simply eating regular meals to maintain good energy levels and food variety. For others it may mean eating certain foods to improve hormonal balance.

Here is a list of fertility-boosting foods that work on specific areas of reproduction and improve general health at the same time;

·            Protein for basic cell building – lean meats, eggs, fish, legumes

·            Essential Fatty Acids – oily fish like salmon & tuna, olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocado, olives, peanut butter

·            Calcium – milk, yoghurt, ice-cream, custard, almonds, sesame seeds

·            Vitamin E to balance hormone production – pumpkin seeds, wholegrains, dark leafy vegetables, wheat germ and nuts

·            Selenium to protect against cell damage and miscarriage – garlic, seafood, chicken, eggs, wholegrains

·            Magnesium for enzyme activation – nuts, green vegetables, wholegrains, beans

·            Manganese to help in sex hormone production – nuts, wholegrains, tea, coffee, fruit, vegetables and bran

·            Zinc aids every aspect of male & female fertility – lean meat, eggs, seafood, wholegrain, dairy and legumes

·            Probiotic to improve intestinal balance – yoghurt, yoghurt-based drinks
