Early detection for Ovarian cancer - 14/06/2010

Every year over 800 Australian women lose their life to ovarian cancer. It is the most serious and life threatening of all gynaecological cancers. 75 per cent of the 1400 cases diagnosed in Australia each year are already at an advanced stage. It is the sixth most common cause of cancer death in women and is more common than cervical cancer. Yet, if it is detected early, it’s a relatively ‘curable’ cancer.

Ovarian cancer may be frightening for women as there is no early detection test for it and the symptoms can be vague and commonplace. However, there is good news about this disease:

  • women have the information and power to catch ovarian cancer in its early stages
  • stage 1 ovarian cancer has a 90 per cent survival rate.
