Color-changing contact lenses alert diabetics to glucose-level changes - 14/06/2010

We have seen some interesting and innovative medical uses for contact lenses recently, including dispensing drugs and even stem cells to help restore sight. The latest medical breakthrough - contact lenses that change color when glucose levels vary – could signal the end of the sometimes painful and inconvenient process of drawing and monitoring blood throughout the day... a welcome relief for most diabetics.

Wow wouldn't it be great that in the not so distant future a Diabetic could just look at themselves in the mirror and depending on the colour of the contact lense, determine if their blood sugar levels were too high or too low. No more 'pricking flesh', no more glucose test strips, no more glucose monitoring machines, no more blood. This invention could save Diabetics lots of money in consumables and also time in taking measurements.

I am not sure how far off this new measurement tool is, but I would hope that Diabetes Australia and the Australian Government support it.
