7 Ways to Improve Prostate Health in 90 Days - Part 2 - 14/06/2010

In part 2 of this article nutritional expert Lisa Vance further explores 7 ways to improve prostate health in 90 days using nutrition.

Here is a list of GREAT foods especially for your prostate!

Eat from this list daily:
  1. Starting your day:
o       Start your day with half a lemon squeezed into a glass of water. Lemon helps to alkalinize the body, drink at least 6 glasses of water a day, put fresh lemon into all of them if you like, try to drink filtered water.
o       Have a freshly pressed/squeezed/juiced vegetable and fruit juice daily: containing at least apple, carrot and lemon.
o       Eat oats for breakfast five days a week.
  1. Eat Italian style tomato sauces a few times a week. Lycopene is the thing that gives tomatoes and watermelon their red colour. It is powerfully protective in prevention and treatment of prostate cancer. (Studies indicate a reduction in prostate cancer risk by 35%, Serfontein, 2002 p152). What about raw tomatoes? Well, eat them too, they are high in vitamin C, which is protective against cancer, but for Lycopene- cooked is better. Lycopene has low solubility in water so cooked tomatoes as in Italian pasta sauces are best options because fats and oils are necessary for the absorption of the fat-soluble Lycopene.
  1. Nuts! Eat a handful of nuts and seeds everyday! They contain vital nutrients such as zinc, selenium and vitamin E. (Especially good choices: pumpkin seeds, Brazil nuts, Walnuts, Almonds.)
  1. Eat 2 pieces of fruit a day: especially figs and grapes (especially seeded purple grapes: they contain antioxidants in their skin and seeds! Figs contain a bunch of nutrients useful for men’s health.)
  1. Eat green vegetables EVERYDAY, especially broccoli, spinach, rocket, kale (if you have severe symptoms eat a head of broccoli a day, snack on it raw or steam it).
  1. Eat vegetable protein at least twice a week! Beans, lentils, pulses and soya (as tofu, tempeh, soya sausages, miso) (as long as you aren’t allergic to soya). Soya contains isoflavones which are know to be cancer protective, soya has been shown to modestly lower homocysteine levels too when eaten twice daily. (Beans, lentils and pulses are high in protein, low in fat and contain important B vitamins). (If you have severe symptoms, have vegetable protein daily.)
  1. Have a Green tea daily (It contains antioxidants that are protective against cancer.)
Extra tip: Get out in the sun for 20 minutes every day (morning sun). Vitamin D (that we get from the sun) is protective against cancer.
